The most memorable cultural movements in history have always developed organically. More often than not, they have been the simple result of a few like-minded people coming together to make something…usually for no other purpose than a common love of doing it.

In the early 1990’s, a loose-knit group of American artists, many just out of their teens, unwittingly started just such a movement. Influenced by the popular underground youth subcultures of the day, such as skateboarding, graffiti, punk and hip-hop music, these artists began to create art that reflected the alternative lifestyles they led. Many of these artists started out with D.I.Y. art shows in a run down store front in the Lower East Side called “The Alleged Gallery.”

The feature documentary film BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the creative spirit connecting artists such as Stephen Powers, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Shepard Fairey (and
many more.)

Opening this weekend at the IFC, BEAUTIFUL LOSERS will have a limited theatrical run here in NYC. Hurry and catch the film!

Afterwards - check out the “Make Something!!” workshops presented by Nike Sportswear and produced by JellyNYC! Stay tuned for more info…

88BoaDrum

Crazy eights. The craziest eights. On 8/8/08 at 8:08pm (PST and EST), the Boredoms will bring 88 drummers to LA and NYC, respectively. The 88-minute performance will be the sequel to last year’s 77BoaDrum. I bet you can guess the time and date of that show.

The performance is totally free (thanks to Nike Sportswear who will also be giving out free commemorative t-shirts), but you have to get tickets ahead of time. Click our schedule links to the right for details.

And if you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch at info@jellynyc.com.

My prediction is the Boredoms will complete the trilogy with 99BoaDrum, which will take place on 9/9/09 at 9:09 in the morning with 99 steel drums outside of the Nine West outlet in Brooklyn. The performance will start in the morning because it will last 9 hours. All of the drummers will be ex-San Francisco 49ers, or just simply, The ‘9ers.
