Last night was a weird one for the NYC comedy scene. Rififi, the East Village comedy staple, finally hosted its last show. Rumors about its closing seemed to surface and disappear for months, but apparently landlord and money issues finally secured the venue’s fate. The manager texted the employees and emailed the show producers yesterday. The email can be read over at comedian Matt Ruby’s blog, The Sandpaper Suit.
This will be a major blow to the NYC alt-comedy scene, and great shows like Totally J/K, Gelmania, and The Greg Johnson and Larry Murphy Show will (hopefully only temporarily) be homeless.
On the bright side, last night’s final show was a doozy. Joe Mande and Noah Garfinkel (Totally J/K) hosted, and a handful of New York’s best comedians performed to a packed house.
Mindy Tucker took lots of great pictures, which are located here.
