And we’re enforcing it for the Yo La Tengo Show this sunday
July 24th, 2008

It was a hot one, but lots of brave souls decided to come out and check out the amazing lineup at the pool this past sunday. Brooklyn residents Team Robespierre started things off by pretty much spending their entire set in the pool, knocking into people and causing general chaos. The lead singer asked if the crowd could come up on stage, was promptly told no by the sound crew, and then said “well do whatever you want.” Eventually the band decided to just jump back into the pit, but not before pissing off a security guard or three.
Bristol, England’s own Fuck Buttons were slightly less rowdy, but sure as hell much louder. Distortion, Fisher Price toys, and the occasional yell or scream seemed to put some people in a daze (or it was just heatstroke). One thing is for sure, the hearing loss we suffered is enough to remember the duo for a long long time.
Closing out the day were Berlin by way of NYC transplants Liars, who were gracious enough to take a day off their tour with some band called Radiohead to play the pool. Angus shouted, jumped, and basically went nuts for a solid hour in the sweltering heat while the rest of the band played on. The one thing that made them our new favorite band? They totally vouched that the pool should stay open for shows. That is always a good way to get on our good side!

Finally, some gorgeous weather! After one show that consisted of 90% monsoon and another that threatened rain for most of the time, it’s nice to finally have a pool party where the weather holds out, the pool fills up, and every loses their mind. The Whip started things off with their own take on dance rock with some heavy electro undertones. Although we kept wondering how the hell is the keyboardist STILL wearing his mesh hoodie? I think it’s safe to say that after their set, the group had won over quite a few new fans (we’re looking at you shirtless yelling dude).
Next up were Matt & Kim, who came on stage, flipped off the audience and went into an hour long jam session filled with blast beats and heavy growling. We’re kidding. If you look up the word happy in the dictionary, you’d see a giant, smiling picture of Matt & Kim holding a puppy or something. The most upbeat duo in the world played one of the most fun, energetic sets at the pool EVER (take that, I’m From Barcelona!). People were crowd surfing, dancing, singing and ignoring the fact that it was 100 degrees out. Then to top it off, they brought out their friends from Brooklyn’s own Rude Mechanical Orchestra for an epic closing set.
Things definitely calmed down a bit for The Breeders, but that doesn’t mean the Deal sisters didn’t bring the rock. New fans, old fans, young and old all seemed to enjoy the set. The sun started to go down as the Breeders began to mellow out a bit and it was a perfect ending for a great day.

The rain didn’t stop us! We won!
The second best part of the summer Pool Parties is reminiscing about the summer Pool Parties. And everyone knows the best reminiscing happens immediately after they happen. So tell us what you thought! Any crazy stories? DO YOU HAVE PICTURES!? Did you meet your soulmate and didn’t even get their number?
Visit www.ThePoolParties.com for discussions, photo shares, hook-ups, and a forum just for dodgeball!
Oh, and the other second best part about the Pool Parties is getting ready for the next one. Anybody up for Ronnie Spector and the The Rabbit Factory Soul Revue next week? Same time, same place. Hopefully less rain.
